Therapy for Families and Parents

Online & In-person in Colorado

Being a parent in today’s world is tough, as it means balancing everyone’s needs, handling conflicts, and managing life’s stress.

Family therapy is a form of counseling that helps families navigate conflicts, improve communication, and strengthen their relationships. It involves all or some family members working with a therapist to address issues affecting the family dynamic, such as communication breakdowns, parenting challenges, unresolved conflicts, or coping with major life changes (e.g., divorce, loss, or illness). The therapist guides family members in exploring their roles, emotions, and behaviors within the family system, intending to foster greater understanding, empathy, and healthier interactions.

Maybe you’re noticing:

  • Frequent conflict or arguments

  • Communication breakdowns

Strengthening family bonds, navigating challenges, and building a healthier future together.

My approach to working with Families and Parents

In my work with families and parents, I take a Family Systems and Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) approach. This means I view the family as a dynamic system, where each member’s emotions, behaviors, and interactions influence the whole family unit. By exploring and understanding these interconnected relationships, we can uncover the root causes of conflicts and dysfunctions, rather than focusing solely on individual issues.

With Family Systems Therapy, I help families identify and change unhealthy patterns of communication, roles, and behavior. This approach fosters a deeper understanding of how family members influence one another, and provides practical tools to improve relationships, set healthier boundaries, and resolve conflicts.

Through Emotion-Focused Family Therapy, I guide family members in recognizing, expressing, and understanding their emotions, particularly the ones that drive behavior. This helps to create empathy, rebuild trust, and encourage emotional closeness. EFFT helps families move from reactive responses to more compassionate, thoughtful interactions, fostering stronger emotional connections.

FAQS

Common questions about therapy for families and parents

  • Family therapy sessions involve open dialogue where each member can share their thoughts and feelings, guided by the therapist. The therapist helps identify patterns, improve communication, and develop strategies for resolving conflicts. For younger children, family play therapy is often used to help them express emotions through play, art, or activities, as they may struggle with verbal communication. The therapist may also engage the family in interactive activities to strengthen bonds and help parents understand and respond to their child’s emotional needs. Overall, therapy provides a safe space for everyone to connect, understand each other, and work toward healthier relationships.

  • The length of therapy depends on the specific challenges being addressed and the family’s goals. Some families may see significant progress in just a few sessions, especially if the focus is on improving communication or resolving a specific issue. Others, particularly those dealing with deeper or more complex issues like trauma, ongoing conflict, or significant behavioral concerns, may require longer-term support. Therapy is tailored to the family’s needs, with regular check-ins to assess progress and adjust goals. The therapist will work with your family to determine the best pace for achieving meaningful, lasting changes.
